For many students, school is more than a place to learn; it is where they develop their identity, build relationships, and discover where they belong. Yet not every student sees their experiences, cultures, or perspectives reflected in the classroom, making it difficult to feel fully included within their school community.
Determined to help change that, Ava Lightburn, Rebeca Ramirez, Mira Yaradi, Leena Khan, and Aria Sapkota founded the Penn High School chapter of Diversify Our Narrative, a student-led initiative dedicated to amplifying diverse student voices through community-centered programs that foster a more inclusive learning environment.
What began as a shared vision among students has grown into a thriving organization with more than 100 members, demonstrating the power of youth leadership in creating meaningful change within schools. Through advocacy, service, and educational initiatives, the chapter is helping ensure every student feels represented, valued, and heard.
Today, the organization's impact extends throughout both Penn High School and the surrounding community. Members have collected more than 250 diverse books for elementary students, helping younger readers see themselves reflected in the stories they read while introducing them to cultures and perspectives beyond their own.
Their commitment to inclusion reaches beyond literacy. The chapter has organized two elementary school read-aloud events, co-organized Penn's Culture Night to celebrate the school's diverse communities, and partnered with the local INDUS chapter to raise more than $350 for hospitals in Pakistan, demonstrating how local action can create global impact.
Along the way, the chapter has earned national recognition for its commitment to educational equity. As one of only two chapters nationwide, Diversify Our Narrative at Penn High School received the 2024 National DON Action Award for Educational Advocacy, recognizing the organization's outstanding efforts to promote inclusion, representation, and student leadership.
By amplifying diverse voices and creating opportunities for every student to feel represented, Diversify Our Narrative isn't just building a more inclusive school; it is empowering a generation of young leaders to shape communities where every story matters.
